Greenville and the Pitt County area of North Carolina is the educational, health, and entertainment hub of Eastern North Carolina. Vidant Health’s flagship medical center is located in Greenville, and known for being the largest employer in the region. The state’s fastest-growing public campus, East Carolina University (ECU) is also located in the city.
Recent renovations and investments have been made to Greenville’s uptown area, attracting more restaurants, bars, retail, and residential properties to the center of the city. Uptown Greenville is connected to the city’s greenway system, linking to several points of interest along the Tar River and throughout other areas of the city.
The medical and educational communities of the city have attracted a diverse population, allowing Greenville to offer a wide range of cultural events. East Carolina University consistently offers theatrical and film productions, educational lectures, and musical concerts to the community. Other arts centers and playhouses are emerging for both children and adults. Restaurants and nightclubs offer live entertainment throughout the week, and especially on the weekends. Shopping, sports, BMX biking, strong Little League Baseball traditions, two stadiums and a coliseum, and a focus on education are only the beginning of what Greenville has to offer.
Designated as North Carolina’s winner in Sports Illustrated’s “Sportstown USA” 50th anniversary celebration, the department operates programs that create a climate for developing leisure time activities that provide creative outlets and encourage skill development. Programs are available to Greenville residents and those of Pitt County who pay a non-resident fee.
The department operates a golf course, gymnasiums, a municipal pool, tennis centers, a teen center, a baseball stadium, parks, and picnic shelters. There are also lighted softball fields, a greenway for bicycling or walking, a skateboard park, and a soccer complex.
